Best hammer I have ever owned. Jan 01, 2010

This 14 oz hammer is just perfect for me. Now please note that being a woman does not make me necessarily inferior to men when it comes to rock and fossil collecting, but you sort of have to consider the dynamics of the human body. Being a woman I simply am not as strong as the average man...that is a pure fact. Also, I found out the hard way that using the larger 22 oz hammer for several hours put quite a strain on my arms and hands.
Now I am more of a meticulous worker than some so busting up large boulders is really not my thing. If I need that done I have a sledge in the jeep which I use, or better yet, I let one of the guys that trek with me do the heavy breaking. That serves two purposes. First it take the strain off me and secondly, it never fails to stroke their, i.e. the guys, egos. They make nifty man grunting sounds and this seems to make them feel good.
Anyway, this hammer is extremely versatile, very well balanced and it is certainly tough enough to get any job I want done and done well. I like the shortness of the shaft as it allows me more accuracy. Granted, there is less power delivered to the blow, but for me the accuracy is the big issue.
There are some maintenance issues as there are with any fine tool. Don't put this puppy away wet and as another reviewer pointed out, keep the corners on the head filed down to prevent burs, splinters and slippage.
The handle fits my hand perfectly and shock is kept to a minimum. I do have the leather belt case to go with it and it is very easy to pack.
I doubt if you will find a better tool for rock hounding on the market.
Readers do take warning though...as has been pointed out, this is not a child's toy and should be treated as such. The little ones need supervision and like the adults supervising them, they need to wear some sort of eye protection
This is a good product and the price is certainly right.

The Queen of Rock Hammers - slightly lighter than the 22 oz model. Perfect for women, children or hikers. Again, file the corners on the head to prevent splinters and burrs.

This is a heavy rock pick and the shipping cost shows it.
However it is the best rock pick there is, and I have used it many times to look into rocks, crevaces etc.
Yes, I suppose you can try and get a $5 hammer at your local hardware store to do the job, but I would rather have a heavy, nicely gripped, the "rolls royce" of rock picks, rock pick, than anything else.

Yes, I actually purchased this rock pick to attack and eliminate the ice build up around the outside of my house, left behind by all the horrid storms so far this winter (2010-2011). I *was* using a hammer and chisel, both noisy and dangerous...I suffered from many missed hammer hits! When I saw this online, I thought it would be the perfect solution and it's worked flawlessly! No more loud clanging of a hammer on a metal chisel, since I'm hitting the ice directly with the pick side. Also, one arm doesn't get fatigued, since I can use this with my right AND left hand when chipping ice! I know it's not created for this purpose, but I thought I'd share my very positive experiences using it for this purpose...no more ice around my HVAC compressor unit, no more ice dams in the gutters, no more dangerous layers of ice on the ground from dripping icicles! HOORAY!!!
I would caution that 1) you should still wear eye protection when using this to chip ice...2) be careful what you hit when chipping the ice with the pick end...you don't want to puncture anything or otherwise damage an underlying surface...3) be sure to dry off the pick when done to keep it in top shape. :)

This was a present for my wife the rock hound, she loves it and it is the perfect weight for her. It has cracked open many a geode and many other types just to see what is inside.
