The Valley Soft-Touch Chisel Edge Rock Hammer, sometimes called a Paleontologist's Hammer or Fossil Hammer, has a 20 ounce head and is constructed of one piece drop forged steel with continuous forging grain flow from head to shaft. The rubber grip is finger fitted, shock absorbent and non-slip. The Valley Soft-Touch Chisel Edge Rock Hammer is very similar to the Estwing Supreme 20oz Chisel Edge Rock Hammer. It differs from the Estwing mostly in the design of the grip and it is a bit shorter. The chisel edge doesn't have as much bend or bow to it as does the Estwing Supreme Chisel Edge Rock Hammer. The Valley Soft-Touch Chisel Edge Rock Hammer has a square faced striking head on one end and a chisel edge on the other. The chisel edge is used for splitting layered rock such as shale and slate into flat sheets, usually when hunting fossils. I found the Valley Rock Hammer very well made. The finish was excellant and the balance and the rubber handle make it comfortable to use. It's forged construction gives one confidence that it'll be around for a long time. I particularly liked the yellow and black handle which makes it hard to leave behind while chipping samples. The handle is on the short side which relieves stress on the wrist. It's not for heavy duty use but for general purpose sampling of rock samples.

I had thought it would be comprable to an estwing, but the quality is not good. It nicks at the slightest tap on a stone. I would not recomend this chinese knockoff.

Great Looking Hammer - Poor Design Oct 23, 2010

Have had this hammer for about three or four weeks. Great hammer, nice looking, however after a couple of trips I noticed that the black 'button' near the end of the handle was protuding slightly. On a trip this week, the 'button' which turned out to be a plastic rod which goes through the handle, and which secures the handle onto the shaft fell out and disappeared when I was breaking some rocks.
I now have a hammer that tries to come apart when I hit a rock - horrible design! I guess I now have to find a steel rod to replace the plastic one - something Valley should have done in their original design!
I think I'll stick with Estwing for my next hammer purchase!
